Description

Botanical Name: Alocasia Reginula
Common Names: Black Velvet

Alocasia Reginula 'Black Velvet' Description

Alocasia 'Black Velvet' features large, almost black leaves with a thick, velvety texture and contrasting white or silver veins. The leaves are broadly heart-shaped and grow from a central rhizome, giving the plant a dense, compact appearance. This Alocasia stays relatively small, usually not growing more than 12-18 inches tall, which makes it ideal for tabletops or small stands.

Care Plan for Alocasia Reginula 'Black Velvet'

Light: This plant prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate medium light levels. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can scorch the delicate leaves. The ideal placement is near a north-facing window or a few feet away from a south or west-facing window with a sheer curtain for light diffusion.

Watering: Water the 'Black Velvet' when the top inch or so of the soil has dried out. It prefers consistently moist soil but is susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Make sure the pot has good drainage, and use a well-draining potting mix. In the winter, reduce watering frequency as the plant’s growth slows.

Humidity: High humidity is essential for the 'Black Velvet' to thrive, mimicking its native tropical environment. Maintain high humidity around the plant by using a humidifier, misting the leaves regularly, or placing it on a pebble tray filled with water.

Temperature: Keep the plant in a warm environment with temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid drafts and sudden temperature drops which can stress the plant and cause leaf loss. Very sensitive to the cold.

Child and Pet Safety: Alocasia 'Black Velvet' is toxic if ingested due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystals. These crystals can cause irritation of the mouth, tongue, and throat, difficulty swallowing, and gastrointestinal upset in both pets and humans. It's important to keep this plant out of reach of children and pets.

General Tips: Fertilize every two months during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Keep an eye out for pests such as spider mites and aphids, which are attracted to the plant's lush foliage. Regularly wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and enhance their natural sheen.
