2-pack Calathea Plants Variety Pack in 4" Pots
Calathea Description
Calathea leaves are typically large and broad, often with intricate patterns and vibrant colors such as greens, whites, pinks, and purples. The leaves move up at night as though in prayer, which is why they share the nickname "prayer plants" with their Marantaceae family relatives. This movement is due to changes in water pressure in the nodes at the base of the leaves.
Care Plan for Calathea
Light: Calatheas prefer bright, indirect light but are particularly sensitive to direct sunlight, which can fade their colors and burn their leaves. They can adapt to medium light conditions, which may slow growth and reduce the vibrancy of the leaf colors. Avoid low light as it can lead to leaf loss and poor plant vitality.
Watering: These plants prefer consistently moist soil but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil starts to dry out. Use lukewarm, distilled or non-fluoridated water, as Calatheas can be sensitive to fluoride and other chemicals commonly found in tap water. Overwatering or poor drainage can lead to root rot.
Humidity: Calatheas thrive in high humidity environments, mimicking their natural tropical habitat. Household air often becomes too dry for these plants, so using a humidifier, placing a pebble tray with water beneath the plant, or regular misting can help keep them healthy.
Temperature: Maintain indoor temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid sudden temperature drops and drafts, as Calatheas are sensitive to cold and may respond by curling or browning their leaves.
Child and Pet Safety: Calatheas are non-toxic to both pets and children, making them a great choice for family homes.
General Tips: Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a diluted, balanced fertilizer. Rotate the plant periodically to ensure even growth and dust the leaves regularly to allow the plant to breathe and absorb moisture. Pruning old or yellowed leaves will help keep your Calathea healthy and attractive.
