Botanical Name: Kalanchoe blossfeldiana
Common Names: Flaming Katy
Kalanchoe Plant Description
Kalanchoes are characterized by their thick, fleshy leaves which can retain water, making them quite drought-tolerant. The leaves are typically green, but some varieties may have leaves with red or creamy yellow edges. Flowers are small, but they grow in dense clusters and can last for several weeks, adding a cheerful pop of color. The plant has a compact growth habit, making it ideal for windowsills, desks, or tabletops.
Care Plan for Kalanchoe
Light: Kalanchoes thrive in bright, indirect light and can also tolerate direct sunlight for part of the day. However, too much direct sunlight can cause leaf burn, while insufficient light can lead to leggy growth and fewer blooms.
Watering: Water your Kalanchoe thoroughly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so be sure the pot has good drainage. Reduce watering in the winter when the plant's growth naturally slows.
Humidity: Kalanchoes do well in typical household humidity levels and do not require any additional humidity.
Temperature: Keep the plant in temperatures between 60-85°F (15-29°C). Kalanchoes are not frost-tolerant and should be protected from cold drafts and extreme temperature fluctuations.
Child and Pet Safety: Kalanchoes are considered toxic to pets if ingested. They contain compounds that can cause gastrointestinal upset, such as vomiting or diarrhea, in cats and dogs. The plant is generally not considered highly toxic to humans but should still be kept out of reach of small children to avoid accidental ingestion.
General Tips: Fertilize your Kalanchoe every few months with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer, especially during the blooming period. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms. If the plant becomes leggy, prune back the stems to help promote bushier growth.
