Common Names: Sweetheart, Lucky-heart
Botanical Name: Hoya kerrii
Hoya Sweetheart Description
The Hoya Sweetheart typically comes as a single, fleshy, heart-shaped leaf planted in a small pot. While it can eventually grow into a vining plant with multiple leaves and even produce clusters of star-shaped flowers, this growth can take several years, especially if the plant remains a single leaf without an active stem segment.
Care Plan for Hoya Sweetheart
Light: Hoya Sweetheart thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning or late afternoon, but prolonged exposure to intense direct sun can scorch the leaves. In too low light, growth will be sluggish.
Watering: Water the Hoya Sweetheart sparingly. The leaf is succulent-like and stores water, so it prefers the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is a common issue and can lead to root rot, especially if the pot does not have adequate drainage.
Humidity: This plant does well in average home humidity but will benefit from higher humidity levels. If you notice dry leaf tips or edges, consider increasing humidity through occasional misting, using a humidifier, or placing the plant on a pebble tray.
Temperature: Keep your Hoya Sweetheart in an environment that’s consistently warm, between 60-85°F (15-29°C). Avoid drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Child and Pet Safety: Hoya plants are generally considered non-toxic to both pets and humans, making them a safe choice for a household with pets and small children.
General Tips: Fertilize sparingly, only during the spring and summer months, with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Due to its slow growth, the Hoya Sweetheart does not need frequent repotting and will be content in the same pot for several years.
